Gah! Storm here, hail and very light snow, and the power's out at school. I'm currently at home trying to prep for a class that may or may not happen. *frown* I hate winter weather.

On a more positive note, two recs:

[livejournal.com profile] rexluscus has a lengthy, perceptive, and generally wonderful post about strong female characters here, in which she interrogates the elusive quality of "complexity" we always say we're looking for (and failing to find) in women characters and finds that the concept may be distracting us from other aspects of the debate. It's not the level of character complexity that's the problem, Rex writes, pointing out that paper-thin male characters are invested with rich inner lives in fandom. "It's the cultural value we ascribe to the kinds of choices that determine the character's narrative. Don't be deterred by the length; this is a post worth reading in full. ETA: The post is f-locked. ETA2: Now accessible!

Id-fic for Sally Donovan fans (Sherlock BBC): You Play the Cards You're Dealt by [livejournal.com profile] tristesses, Sally Donovan, Sherlock Holmes, gen, 800 words. Summary: Sally counts the reasons why she despises Sherlock Holmes. Yes, it's as satisfying as you think it will be. Even a hint of any of these reasons would have made the BBC relationship so much more real and vibrant.

And, finally, a year-end femslash exchange you don't want to miss (and yes, you have time for one more--this is very low-stress):

[personal profile] woldy is hosting a low-key, year-end exchange for HP femslash fans on her flist! Possibly even lower-stress than rs_small_gifts, and heaven knows we try to make that as low-stress as humanly possible. Sign up now through November 9 by leaving three wishes, claim after 12:01a GMT on November 10, and submit a 500-2000 word story (or art) by December 13-ish. (Details on the sign-up post here. The exchange is limited to W's flist, but I'm sure she wouldn't mind welcoming a few more femslash fans.) What could be easier than that?
