Sneaking online for a very quick meme, seen recently at
kellychambliss and
therealsnape: List fifteen fictional characters (television, films, plays, books, comics) who've influenced you and will always stick with you. List the first fifteen you can recall in no more than fifteen minutes. I got it down to sixteen characters (or pairs of characters) who are so vivid and real they feel like old friends, plus a few HP characters. (The word "friends" is telling; the only fundamentally unsympathetic one here is Umbridge, but I just had to include her.) Oddly, they were almost all from books. Most are from children's or young adult novels or series that I read repeatedly when I was young. What about you?
The childhood favorites:
Laura Ingalls Wilder (The Little House books)
Betsy Ray and Tacy Kelly (The Betsy-Tacy books)
Anne Shirley (The Anne of Green Gables books)
Caddie Woodlawn (Caddie Woodlawn)
Celie (The Color Purple)
Anne Gordon and Sally Rausch (And Ladies of the Club)
Karana (Island of the Blue Dolphins)
Meg Murray and Polly O’Keefe (various Madeline L’Engle books)
The happy couples:
Annie and Liza (Annie on my Mind)
Omar and Johnny (My Beautiful Laundrette)
The moody protagonists:
Julie (Blue, one of Krzysztof Kieslowski's Three Colors Trilogy)
Inspector Morse (Inspector Morse / ITV mystery series)
For pure fun:
Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson
William of Baskerville (Name of the Rose)
Joe Leaphorn and Jim Chee (from the Tony Hillerman / PBS mystery series)
Kermit and Miss Piggy (The Muppets)
And the most vivid, memorable HP characters (though this list could go on):
Hermione Granger
Dolores Umbridge
Remus Lupin
Sirius Black
Severus Snape
