You Say You Want a Revolution, Amelia Bones and Alastor Moody, with background Amelia Bones/Pomona Sprout, 8300 words, rated R
Amelia Bones led the investigation into Voldemort’s identity in the 1970s. This is how she got the case.
This excellent fic makes use of my very favorite wizarding world plot device ever: the likelihood that in such a small community everyone is related to everyone else. Alastor Moody is both a relative of Pomona Sprout and a colleague of Pomona's on-again-off-again partner Amelia Bones, and he's the way we get into Amelia's head as she struggles to reconcile her desire to improve her relationship with Pomona with her obsessive interest in the case of a lifetime. The prompt called for a cop or detective duo, and thus Amelia's and Moody's friendship here is companionate, supportive of her professional and romantic exploits rather than a subject of inquiry itself. Instead, the fic focuses on recovering some of the confusion that marked the first days of Voldemort's rise, back before it was clear just what was going on, and just who was responsible. Also, lots of queer people and lots of politics! We love that.
Sybill Trelawney and the Unexpected Gift, Sybill Trelawney, Minerva McGonagall, 8100 words, rated PG
Sybill Trelawney learns to live with her Inner Eye, cooking sherry, and Minerva McGonagall, in that order.
One of the downsides of the humor running though HP canon is the way that it turns minor characters into jokes. This fic takes a character who's not treated fully or fairly in the books and turns our assumptions about her upside down. Forget the flighty, unselfconscious fraud who occasionally, unknowingly happens to offer a genuine prediction--Sybill here is fully aware that she's in possession of a gift so powerful she can't hope to control it. People don't want to hear the truth about their lives or their futures, and Sybill suffers the consequences of her truth-telling while learning to play off the hopes and fears of her audiences with lesser observations and predictions.
In form, this fic may have been the closest to what I'd imagined I'd see at the fest. (Though I have to say I've been pleasantly surprised by the fest's sheer variety, so I'm not complaining!) It's a story about the way two people form a significant (non-romantic) bond, a story that's structured around key events and interactions and culminates in a moment of raw intimacy that changes them both forever. I wish we saw more of this kind of fic in fandom--stories about emotional intimacy that don't depend on our assumptions that romantic love is paramount, climaxes are always sexual, and "happily every after" is a satisfactory ending.
