First a PSA: [insanejournal.com profile] hp_beholder is back! More details over here. Come join us!

I don't think I did a year-end meme in 2012, so let's say we're covering 2012 and 2013 this time around. Borrowing the general format from [livejournal.com profile] kellychambliss.

For the two-year period: 11 fics, a couple of ficlets, and one piece of art (I know, I know, I was surprised, too!). (For the curious, the master list is over here.)

Total word count: Roughly 26,000 words in total over the two-year period, with about 75% of the total coming this past year. Three stories in the 4000 to 5000 word range, the rest ranging from 1000 to 2500.

Characters and pairings? Five of the eleven stories were Remus/Sirius. (Though to be fair, not all of my Remus/Sirius fics have a lot a Remus/Sirius in them; they tend to be gen-ish and/or feature other characters.)

Of the remaining six fics, three were femslash (Minerva/Poppy, Ginny/Millicent, Minerva/Moaning Myrtle/Amelia Bones, plus there was a Tonks/Emmeline, if you're willing to double-count one of the Remus/Sirius stories that featured them prominently).

Two were gen featuring Minerva (with a little femslash lurking in the background in one), and one was an Elementary gen fic with Joan and Sherlock.

Anyone new there? Moaning Myrtle, whom I've wanted to write for ages. Millicent; I don't write that generation often. And Joan and Sherlock.

Looking back, did you write more fic than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you'd predicted? In 2013, more than I would have predicted, given my low output in 2012 and 2011.

What's your own favorite story of the year? Perhaps "La Isla Magica," which sets out a version of the Remus/Sirius story that I've always wanted write--a late-in-life encounter between two people weren't necessarily meant to be together.

Did you take any writing risks this year? No--none that made it to posting, that is. When I signed up to write the story that would become "La Isla Magica" for [livejournal.com profile] torino10154 for [livejournal.com profile] rs_small_gifts this year, I thought I'd do something genuinely porny. Turns out I'm still too buttoned-up. I found a story-line that was about sex, tried several drafts, and ultimately went with a version of "La Isla Magica" that included only a brief description of the good stuff.

What did I learn? I enjoy reading porn, and heaven knows I imagine enough of it, but I may not be the person to write it down. I think my fic is too much therapy, and therapy and porn don't mix.

My best story of this year: Perhaps one of my ficlets for [livejournal.com profile] hp_halloween, "One Good Thing," with Severus and Eileen. It's a story I've wanted to tell, composed with the minimum number of words possible, more poetry than narrative. I love the challenge of 200 words at that fest, plus the joy of being able to binge and read everyone else's entries in a single afternoon.

Most fun story to write: My art, "Prior Incantato," for [livejournal.com profile] deeply_horrible, actually. I used to be much more creative and crafty person when I was younger, and it was fun to do something that reminded me I still have that in me.

Story with the single sexiest moment: Ha!

Most "Holy crap, that's wrong, even for you" story: These questions really weren't designed for someone as tame as me.

Story that shifted my own perceptions of the characters: I really enjoyed writing about Joan and Sherlock in "Trendline Adjustment," remembering what it means to start writing fic in a new fandom. There's a lot of discovery involved in finding the voices and figuring out their conflicts and motivations. As I'm sure I've told you in other contexts, I think Joan particularly could be developed in fic in a way she's not in the show. I'm not sure I'm returning to either Elementary or Sherlock because I just don't want to get involved in another fandom, but there are ideas percolating.

Hardest story to write: "Sorted," which ultimately was fine, but which really should have been either a longer or a shorter story than it was. It had several distinct sections, each with a different POV, all of which wanted to be a fuller story than I had time to write. And though I spent a lot of time on it, I didn't have time to edit the whole down to a tighter, more focused story.

Easiest Story to Write: "At the Age of Eleven," a short fic (about 1100 words) that I managed to get done in a single sitting, without a pause in typing, even. Some things just flow.

Story With the Single Sweetest Moment: Question: when you think of me, do you say, Maggie writes such sweet stories? I feel like sweetness (or bittersweetness) defines my stories. I have a hard time writing in another key, so to speak.

Most Overdue Story: Let's not go down this path.

Story That Made You Cry: I cry frequently writing fic. Perhaps that's something I should worry about.

Did You Meet Your Writing Goals for 2012 and 2013? More writing is always good, but I'm playing the long game in fandom these days--how do I stay involved, creative, interested? I'm proud that I managed to participate in [livejournal.com profile] deeply_horrible, [livejournal.com profile] minervafest, [livejournal.com profile] hp_halloween, [livejournal.com profile] hoggywartyxmas, [insanejournal.com profile] hp_beholder, [livejournal.com profile] woldy's Informal Femslash Exchange, [profile] femslash_remix, and of course [livejournal.com profile] rs_small_gifts.

Fic-writing goals for 2014: Stay in the game!
