Jane Jacobs, the journalist and writer on cities. (She's on wikipedia, too, but this was a more concise link.) She wrote an extraordinarily influential book about cities in the early 1960s and then moved onto broader issues (largely economics) later in life, and I've alway been curious to hear what she might have said about cities today. Generally I feel about authors the way I feel about actors (Don't talk--write! It's what you're good at!) but this might be an exception.
