magnetic miscellany...
Sep. 26th, 2011 08:55 pmUPDATE: Not much news from this part of the world, but I want to get in the habit of posting again...The beginning of the semester has swallowed me whole, as it always does...Heavy, late-summer rain storms resulted mosquitoes everywhere, and I'm covered in swollen, half-golf-ball-sized bites...The better half has been baking, lemon bars and apple cake. (Which I'm eating on my day off,
game_is_on folks, I promise!)...I have a lovely new office at work. Next door to piano practice rooms. Where sometimes a concert pianist practices. (Yay!) And sometimes beginners take lessons. (Woe.)...
On the fannish front,
rs_small_gifts, the year-end Remus/Sirius exchange, is running again, for no less than the sixth (!) year...I'm also planning on writing some year-end femslash and watching
hp_holidaygen...In the flurry of the beginning of classes, I completely missed sign-ups for
hoggywartyxmas, which was disappointing, though reading along should be fun...
Over at
lgbtq_recs we're reading Fall On Your Knees until the end of the month--finish up the book and drop by to comment!

QUESTION: I've been thinking about fic at lot lately, partly because I really want to write and I have no time, and partly because I'm trying to figure out where I'm headed next as a writer. (Hoping and assuming I'll have a bit more time for writing soon.) What are your next writerly (or artistic) challenges, flist? Longer stories? Different characters? Different voices? New themes?

Date: 2011-09-27 04:27 pm (UTC)As for my own writing, the biggest challenge I'm facing at the moment is finding fresh ways to write about my same characters. I love Minerva and the HP older women and Severus as much as ever, but I'm beginning to fear that I may have said what I have to say about them. I don't want merely to repeat myself, but I think I may be doing so.
Oh, well -- I have several more HP stories upcoming, so I'll have to figure out something.

Date: 2011-09-28 05:11 am (UTC)Yes, the search for fresh ideas is one of the things I've been worried about. I had a brief moment of optimism about Pottermore bringing an infusion of new canon/ideas/minor characters to write about. Then reality set in. (I didn't even read the Minerva bit--sometimes I think JKR can actually set my own plans back by sounding stupid on other fronts.) Beholder (and Hoggywarty) did some good things for fandom just by grouping characters together in a way I hadn't thought of before, and there must be organizational things we can do to spark new ideas. And heaven knows I can write a lot about topics I've studied for years. But I do want more *issues* to solve with my by-now-familiar characters, and I'm not sure where they're going to come from.
In other news, good to see you again! M.
