Year in review: 2011 and 2010
Jan. 14th, 2012 10:09 pmI think I missed doing this last year. A brief version of the fannish meme
So, a good year or two for writing? No. Really abysmal fic production last year; three stories total, all rather short (about 7,700 words altogether). 2010 was better: about 10 items (or 30,000 words), a total I hope I can match again this year.
Favorite stories? My favorite was Because It Is My Heart, a story about Petunia's ill-fated relationship with Alice Longbottom. I always try to start a story with an emotional truth, but this fic felt more real and more true to me than any I'd written. I had a blast writing A Life of Crime as a way of fixing some of the gender problems of the Sherlock series, and Touchy, Feely as a way of trying to understand Voldemort's sudden urge to hug his followers in the last movie. I have to remember: don't preach; subvert and mock. More fun for everyone!
Hardest to write? Air Heart, primarily because it was longer and more complex than most of my fics.
Most widely read? My meta Neoliberal Holmes, which drew some really intelligent comments and remains more or less All I Have to Say On That Topic. More generally, though: I'm eternally grateful to the flist for continuing to read my fic. You have no idea how much support and encouragement you've offered over the year just by being there.
Biggest disappointment? Defaulting on Beholder last spring. I'm awful with deadlines but had never failed to deliver before. It caused a crisis of sorts in RL, actually; totally apart from fandom, I've got to get work under control and learn how to give less than 110% on everything. Sometimes 70% will get the job done, Maggie!
Notable changes? Not really, apart from the slowing pace of my writing. I've started reading fic and meta in Sherlock Holmes, but ultimately, I'm discovering the sheer variety of minor characters and themes in HP and the complexity of the wizarding world are what get me writing and thinking. I miss getting excited about new canon, but fandom's only partly about canon; it's also about writing and people, and that's as good now as it's ever been.
Anything new coming up? Hm. Would love to do another quick challenge; I like those. I've been thinking about something on issues of justice in HP as a way of sparking new thinky and interesting fics; need to look into that. Contrary to what everyone on the flist seems to be saying, I may sign up for more fests as a way of giving myself some writing deadlines.
Resolutions for 2012? Read more and rec more. I might finally start bookmarking fics (I know, I know) so that it's easier to find them again and easier to rec. Write more. Try for longer and more complex stories.
Thanks for reading, flist. May 2012 bring us all more time for fandom and fun.

Date: 2012-01-15 10:07 pm (UTC)That's good to know! I like revisionist fic--fic that really questions some of the assumptions of the books and of fandom--so I love Beholder, and I think I may enjoy the fics at dudley_redeemed (missed that entirely, somehow), and perhaps there are already other, similar fests out there? I'll have to look into it.
Thanks for reading, C! M.
