* There were dozens of folks buying beer and walking along the street carrying bowls and platters--presumably Superbowl snacks--earlier this evening. In previous years I've sometimes missed the Superbowl completely. Is it suddenly a big thing here in the US, folks who don't even care about football going to Superbowl parties? Was it just the warm weather bringing everyone out tonight, and I happened to notice?

* I'd forgotten how erratic weather in this part of the world can be. It was in the single digits (-12C ish) mid-week last week. Today it got up to 63F (17C). Tomorrow we're supposed to get snow.

* If I were JKR and I were taking a hard look at my series, I'm not sure that I'd single out Hermione/Ron as something that I'd do differently. I mean, all the camping in the last book, definitely. Everything related to house-elves. Everything having to do with Snape after, say, HBP. Having written the epilogue at all. Etc, etc. But given a world in which Hermione/Ron seems meaningfully different from Hermione/Harry, I'm a bit charmed by the fact that she's still thinking through the implications of what she wrote and I still care to listen. For all of my intense dislike of Pottermore and JKR's continued commentary on her own work, I recognize that her evolving views of the series will influence the way HP is read and, crucially, adapted for the next set of movies.* More power to her for rethinking some assumptions she had the first time around.

* A few years ago [livejournal.com profile] cordelia_v mentioned very casually that she was looking forward to the remake of the movies, and I realized how right she was, that we'll probably see a re-thinking of this series in our lifetimes. It's a pretty powerful and wonderful thought, to suddenly realize that the HP we've all been reading is only the 1990s/2000s version.

That is insanely erratic. 30C variance over a week? Yeesh.
