Severus, Lily
G, 200 words
“Severus!” Lily hissed. “Help! What should I do?”
Severus glanced at her seething cauldron. Should we be talking in class? he thought sarcastically. But he ducked under his desk, knife in hand, pushed down his shoe and sock, and casually nicked the hard part of his heel.
Luckily, Slughorn rarely noticed him, even when he wanted to be seen.
“Dead skin,” he whispered, dropping it in her cauldron. The liquid calmed immediately.
“Eww,” Lily whispered.
“W-works every time.” He shoved his shoe back on.
Lily frowned.

Hogwarts, it seemed, conspired to keep Severus from his education. Certain spells were banned. The Ministry controlled potions ingredients. Half his classes were theoretical, with no magic allowed at all.
Now there was Lily.
“But Severus,” Lily said later. “There’s a reason we don’t use human parts.”
Severus thought of his milk teeth in a jar in the kitchen at home. “I'm none the worse for wear.”
“But what if someone had taken skin from you, forcibly? Or a bone?”
“That’s why we have wands,” Severus said.
“And black-market apothecaries,” Lily countered.
No one understood; the most ancient magic couldn't be made harmless. Shouldn't. Severus would have to learn on his own.
