Podcast rec: Wild Ones
Sep. 6th, 2014 12:43 pmNot tagged by anyone, but I love seeing so many new entries on the flist generated by the positivity meme* so I'm going to see if I can summon up a few good things to pass along, too. Maybe not three per day, but we'll try.
Podcast rec: Wild Ones, Live [32:52, worksafe]
I've been working my way through back episodes of a podcast called 99% Invisible, which is, essentially, a series of short segments on design in our everyday lives. I'd recommend the entire podcast wholeheartedly--the episodes are short and snappy and surprisingly vivid considering you're listening to folks talk about visual and spatial issues. But yesterday I listened to a special episode that knocked my socks off, a meditation on the relationship between people and wild animals, complete with accompanying sound track. (I know, I know, not really about design at all, but never mind.) Make yourself a cup of tea, sit down for half an hour, and enjoy this poignant and lyrical piece. You won't regret it.
* Want to be tagged yourself? The challenge is three positive things per day for five days. I'd love to hear from you...

Date: 2014-09-06 07:33 pm (UTC)I visited zoos twice this summer, with nieces and nephews. Not my first choice of activities - I had very mixed feelings. A lot of discomfort at seeing animals who seemed unhappy or distressed by the way they were confined, but it was also gratifying to see a really wide range of people who were (hopefully) learning from the zoos' educational efforts. Anyway, even though zoos weren't addressed in the Wild Ones podcast, it reminded me of those human/animal interactions and I will be thinking about all this.

Date: 2014-09-18 12:36 am (UTC)I'm so glad you listened and enjoyed. You're absolutely right about the way the music supported the text--I listened to the piece three times in all, and the third time (late night, tired, a bit weepy anyway) I teared up at the musical cues.
Agreed on the zoos, as well. Don't even know what to say on that front. :( M.
