Posting challenge 9/17: Five things meme
Aug. 15th, 2017 11:08 pmBorrowing this one from
shaggydogstail, cross-posting from my tumblr.
5 things you’ll find in my bag: Mm, I try not to carry a bag. In my shorts pockets today: keys, phone, metro card, cash, ID
5 things you’ll find in my bedroom: books, books, books (the better half has decreed that the living room shall not look like a library, so the bedroom does); a clock-radio from the 1980s; several shirts that will probably never be hand-washed or scrubbed for stains; my one stuffed animal, a fluffy sheep the size of a volleyball; a mug with two dozen rainbow colored Sharpies
5 things I’ve always wanted to do: live above a grocery store or restaurant; live in a megacity; travel in North Africa, West Africa, or India; take gorgeous photos; write a novel
5 things that make me happy: sunshine, baked goods, air conditioning, eating out, baby animals
5 things I’m currently into: shorts and tee shirts, high-SPF sunblock, swimming, long periods of silence, not commuting
5 things on my to-do list: The real answer to this will bore you to tears. (They are all work tasks with rapidly approaching deadlines.) Instead: nephew-proof the apartment (they and their parents will be here for a few days); clean the shower (and pretend I do that regularly); purchase various yummy baked goods (under the pretense that they are for the nephews); check to see if I can bring the nephews to the pool; plan various retreat strategies for when it all gets to be too much
Anyone else interested?

Bad news with the nephews--the younger one was hospitalized after a near-drowning. Feeling grateful for quick intervention and modern medicine! M.

Date: 2017-08-16 07:13 am (UTC)It looks as if we're both thoroughly into summer mood, although I'm lucky enough to be done with deadlines for the rest of the month. Off to day to stroll over the market...
One thing surprises me, Better Half struck me as a lovely and eminently sensible person when I had the good fortune of meeting her. And yet she has this strange prejudice against a room looking like a library. She sounds almost as if there's something wrong with a room looking like a library. Don't get it.
I wish I had an Irma Pinch icon at DW because a bedroom library deserves one. Would she be horrified at the thought of sleeping (and occasionally doing things other than sleeping) in a library, or would she grin and turn out to have unexpected sides to her? Suddenly pondering Irma Pinch F/F.

Date: 2017-08-20 03:34 am (UTC)The better half is very sensible--more than me--but she's also a library person. Read and return is her motto.
Irma would have so many issues with me even before she got to the bedroom library problem. I not only use a pencil to underline and make notes in my books, I also use that pencil as a bookmark. She'd be horrified.
Bad news with the nephews--the younger is in the hospital after a near-drowning. He's okay, but thank goodness for a quick response team and modern medicine. M.

I so know the agony of trying to make it look like you didn't just spend 23 hours prior to your guests' arrival doing a year's worth of cleaning. Best of luck with that and with coming up with coping strategies! I hope it's a good visit.

Date: 2017-08-20 03:38 am (UTC)Oh my word, there can never be enough long periods of silence.
Bad news on the nephews and the family visit--a mishap put the younger one in the hospital. Everything's okay, but thank goodness for modern medicine. M.

Date: 2017-08-18 11:02 pm (UTC)I'm impressed that you can get by without a bag. Mine is heavy as hell. D:
I totally have a clock-radio from the early 1990s.
Have fun with your nephews!

Date: 2017-08-20 03:55 am (UTC)You know, the no-bag thing only works in the summer. During the year I've got to bring one to carry my computer, and I do collect...stuff. A water bottle. Lunch tupperware. Extra napkins. I can see how it would be very easy to add chapstick, a pen, tissue and find yourself toting a lot around!
Ha! I looked on E-Bay and discovered my clock my clock is now "vintage."
Bad news with the nephews--a mishap landed the younger one in the hospital. He's okay, but yikes! Close calls are scary. M.

Date: 2017-08-20 05:05 pm (UTC)I'm impressed that you still have your 80s clock-radio. My beloved one died long ago (as have all my alarm clocks, actually. I just use my phone now).
And I'm with you about the joys of eating out. It rarely gets old for me, even if "out" is just a fast-food place.

Date: 2017-08-24 01:58 am (UTC)Eating out is really lovely, isn't it? Nothing nicer than someone bringing you good food. I wish we paid more for it and the industry paid better. It's such important work. M.
