1. Are you Irish? Possibly a bit. (I don't know that much about my ancestors. One side of the family immigrated relatively recently (early 20c) from Sweden; the other side's history is more nebulous and might include some Irish among the Germans and Scots.)
2. Do you like Guinness? No. Don't really drink at all, in fact.
3. Do you know what the symbol of Ireland is? The harp?
4. Have you ever watched Father Ted? I haven't even heard of Father Ted.
5. Do you believe in leprechauns? No. Wow, I'm really failing this Irish quiz, aren't I?
In other, non-Irish news, the last out-of-town guest of the spring break has now departed, and the regular work week is on the horizon. Big take-aways of this last visit? If you're mid-forties-ish and you've been keeping up with someone since college, you've actually known each other for longer than you hadn't known each other, and long enough to have forgotten entire episodes in your relationship. (Or maybe my memory's just getting worse very quickly, and folks are being polite with me.) Also, the Obamas are still the hottest ticket in town. We had to wait in line to see their portraits at the National Portrait Gallery.

Date: 2018-03-19 01:08 am (UTC)I love that so much tv is available now--youtube, streaming, etc. It's change my approach to tv watching, to be able to browse like you would at a bookstore.
Thanks for reading! M.

Date: 2018-03-19 01:45 am (UTC)It’s always fascinating to examine long relationships, isn’t it? I hope you had a fun and relaxing week.

Date: 2018-03-19 04:58 pm (UTC)Isn't LL Cool J fabulous? Wiley's exaggerated style is much more suited to him than Obama. I do like the Obama portrait enormously, though.
I've been thinking about friendship a lot recently--something sparked by recent visits but also reading about a study that showed that a significant percentage of people who feel that someone is a friend don't have that sentiment reciprocated. Somehow that touched me and got me thinking. So much unrequited love fic and so little unrequited friendship! M.

Date: 2018-03-19 04:41 pm (UTC)Somehow that bra comment made me laugh. :) I think it's because the better half is a bra-hater, and while *technically* she's probably worn a bra for thirty years, in actual hours, it's much, much less than that. /tmi Thanks for reading, TJ! M.

Date: 2018-03-20 12:04 am (UTC)YES! I do the same thing about Washington. I haven't lived there since I was like 23, but I still say I'm ~from~ there... but now I just say I was born and raised there because that will always be true no matter how long it's been since either of those things happened. ;)

Date: 2018-03-19 07:11 am (UTC)Turned out we'd been friends for quite a bit longer than youngster had lived. We thought him a little darling, and he had a 'OMG, the dinosaurs are alive and kicking' moment.

Date: 2018-03-19 06:23 pm (UTC)When same-sex marriage was legalized in NYS, Spouse and I heard a radio commentator remark on how many people were now able to get married after having been together for decades, and we both said AWWWWWWWWWWW and then looked at each other in the shared realization of WAIT THAT'S US. Heh. Who knew we were that old? We're that old.

Date: 2018-03-19 09:20 pm (UTC)I really love the National Portrait Gallery. There's something so powerful about seeing people's faces, and the museum does a great job of getting portraits of folks from all walks of life. M.

Date: 2018-03-20 04:51 am (UTC)Also, I'm not at all sure how Father Ted holds up, but seeing that question made me smile. It used to play late at night on public television when I was a kid, and it was my gateway into staying up and watching strange offerings from abroad. Definitely formative to my sense of humour. :D

Date: 2018-03-23 06:29 pm (UTC)Yikes. I'm sorry you face that on St. Patrick's Day. I'm always surprised/horrified by how often white people make non-white folks' accent/ethnic background/family histories the subject of small talk or intrusive questions. I've watched it happen over and over with the better half, who's Asian American with an name that suggests another race/ethnicity, and folks who have just been introduced will often say "That's an interesting name," in the way that implies they think it doesn't fit and are waiting to hear an explanation. (If they haven't said things like "Where are you from?" or "You speak English really well," of course.)
Funny how watching things at a certain age imprint them on the memory! M.

Date: 2018-03-25 05:36 pm (UTC)There was period back in the 90s when you'd come out to someone and they'd ask you about your sex life, right there, to you face, with no shame and the clear expectation of getting an answer. There's something horrifying/fascinating about what aspects of each other's privacy we feel entitled to violate. M.

Date: 2018-03-23 06:22 pm (UTC)It was really fun to see them in person--more so than I'd expected. It was a very social experience. If you ever make it down here, let me know, and I'd visit them again with you in a heartbeat! M.
